Nigeria player ratings vs Mozambique: Osimhen, Lookman, Akor shine at AFCON 2025

Nigeria’s journey to the AFCON 2025 semi final has followed a familiar pattern, Footynaija.com reports.

With familiar faces and the same partnerships, Eric Chelle has banked on continuity, giving his players the chance to build chemistry with each outing. So far, that has worked. But against Morocco, that stability faces its toughest test yet.

The big miss for Nigeria is Wilfred Ndidi. The Super Eagles captain is ruled out of the semi-final after receiving his second yellow card of the tournament in the win against Algeria. His absence leaves Eric Chelle facing his first real midfield reshuffle of the campaign.

There is also a fitness concern over Bright Osayi-Samuel. The right-back has been one of Nigeria’s most consistent performers, offering both defensive security and forward drive. He reportedly limped off late against Algeria and remains a doubt.

If he fails a late fitness test, Chelle may have to reshuffle his back line, possibly handing Igoh Ogbu a starting role or adjusting the shape slightly.

Up front, Cyriel Dessers remains unavailable due to injury, limiting Nigeria’s attacking depth. That means the front line will once again fall on the trusted trio that has carried the team through the tournament.

Victor Osimhen will start. There is no debate there. He has been Nigeria’s focal point, their emotional spark and their reference point in attack.

With Ndidi missing, Osimhen is also expected to take on the captain’s armband, adding even more responsibility to his role. His movement, physical presence and ability to occupy defenders will be central to how Nigeria hurt Morocco.

Ademola Lookman is also a guaranteed starter. His directness, close control and ability to operate between the lines have made him one of Nigeria’s most dangerous players. He gives the Eagles a route out when they are under pressure and remains a constant goal threat.

Akor Adams has done enough to keep his place. His link-up play with Osimhen has grown with every match, and his goal against Algeria reinforced his importance in this system.

The biggest decision comes in midfield. With Ndidi suspended, Raphael Onyedika is the natural replacement. He offers energy, ball recovery and positional discipline.

Frank Onyeka is expected to continue in his box-to-box role, pressing high and supporting transitions. Alex Iwobi will be responsible for keeping Nigeria’s play flowing and creating chances in the final third.

At the back, Semi Ajayi and Calvin Bassey remain Chelle’s most trusted centre-back pairing. They have been solid in the air, composed on the ball and well organised throughout the tournament. Bruno Onyemaechi should continue at left-back, offering balance between defence and attack.

If Osayi-Samuel is passed fit, he will start at right-back. If not, Igoh Ogbu is the likely replacement.

Stanley Nwabali will remain in goal. His command of the area and calmness under pressure have given Nigeria a stable base.

Predicted Nigeria XI vs Morocco

Nwabali
Osayi-Samuel or Ogbu, Ajayi, Bassey, Onyemaechi
Onyeka, Onyedika, Iwobi
Lookman, Osimhen, Akor Adams
