Not just Troost-Ekong: Another Super Eagles regular now ‘seriously considering quitting’ the national team

Ola Aina has become the latest senior Super Eagles player linked with a possible exit from international football after a report revealed his frustration over how he was treated during his injury spell on national duty, Footynaija.com reports.

The Nottingham Forest defender suffered a hamstring injury in September 2025 while playing for Nigeria in the 2026 World Cup qualifier against South Africa. Scans back in England showed the tear was serious and required surgery.

That procedure sidelined him for months and forced him into a long recovery, with his return to action still uncertain as of late November 2025.

According to a report by the Nation, the 29-year old has told NFF president Ibrahim Gusau that he felt abandoned after picking up the injury while representing Nigeria.

As stated in the report, sources close to the team had said, “Ola (Aina) is seriously considering quitting the Super Eagles. He was far from happy when he was abandoned after he got injured playing for the Super Eagles. He confronted the NFF president on this, clearly disappointed with how he was left on his own even though he was injured on national service.”

This development comes only days after another report revealed that captain William Troost Ekong had decided to step away from the national team entirely. The Al-Kholood defender feared missing club appearances during the AFCON window and had already informed the squad of his decision after the Playoffs against DR Congo.

Aina has been an important figure in the Super Eagles back line for years. However, his growing anger over his injury experience has raised serious questions about the atmosphere around the team, especially at a time when senior players are beginning to consider walking away.
