Head coach of the Libya national team, Aliou Cisse has named the Super Eagles of Nigeria among the top favourites to win the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations tournament, Footynaija.com reports.
The Super Eagles came close to lifting a fourth Africa Cup of Nations crown at the last edition of the tournament, finishing runners-up after falling to a 2-1 defeat to host nation Cote D’Ivoire in the final.
As AFCON 2025 draws closer, the respect Nigeria commands across the continent remains evident. Despite their recent struggles in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, many observers still see the Super Eagles as a team capable of flipping a switch at major tournaments.

Cisse’s recent comments lend credence to that belief, reinforcing the perception that Nigeria’s talent array of top-tier footballing talents and pedigree keep them firmly in the conversation for the title.
“The Moroccan national team is a contender, and Senegal is also a contender, of course, and there are other teams such as Algeria, Egypt and Nigeria,” Cisse said in quotes revealed by Complete Sport.
“In the Africa Cup of Nations, you can’t predict who will win the title. You can predict who will win the World Cup, but with regard to the Africa Cup of Nations, it is very complicated, and surprises are always present.”
The Super Eagles remain one of Africa’s strongest sides, and missing out on the 2026 World Cup has only intensified the pressure on them to deliver in Morocco. This tournament offers a chance to restore pride and remind the continent of their pedigree.
But the road to the trophy won’t be straightforward. The likes of Morocco, Senegal, Algeria and Egypt all pose real threats, while the rise of newer forces, and AFCON’s reputation for springing surprise packages, will really test the Super Eagles.
