Real Sociedad boss addresses Umar Sadiq’s lack of game time ahead of tricky Sevilla test

Real Sociedad head coach Sergio Francisco has shed light on Super Eagles striker Umar Sadiq’s continued absence from the squad, as the Basque country side prepares to take on Sevilla in La Liga, Footynaija.com reports.

Sadiq has endured a frustrating start to the 25/26 campaign, struggling to force his way into Francisco’s plans despite being fit and available. 

The Nigerian striker, who enjoyed a productive loan spell with Valencia during the second half of last season, was among the players Sociedad sought to move on in the summer. However, no transfer materialized, leaving him to fight for his place in a team that appears to have moved on without him.

With nine games already played in the Spanish top-flight so far, the 28-year-old has made the matchday squad on just three occasions, featuring twice as a substitute for a combined total of only fourteen minutes. 

He was left out entirely in Sociedad’s most recent league outing, a 1-1 draw against Celta Vigo last weekend, further fueling questions about his situation at the Basque country club. 

Speaking during a pre-match press conference ahead of the Sevilla clash, Real Sociedad boss Francisco addressed Sadiq’s lack of involvement.

“We had to choose the squad, we had to choose what we felt or what the plan was going to be. Karrika came on and played his best 15 minutes, they’re training very well,” Francisco said, per Eldesmarque.

“What I asked of both of them [Sadiq and Karrika] is that they be available and prepared. The match will determine the choices. Both are available. Karri has taken that step forward so we can count on him more.”

Francisco’s comments suggest Sadiq’s lack of opportunities have been down to tactical choices and competition within the squad rather than any fitness concerns. 

Nonetheless, with Sociedad seeking consistency in front of goal, the pressure is mounting on the Nigerian forward to seize any opportunity that comes his way, should one finally arrive against Sevilla.
