Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets are through to the semifinals of the WAFU B U17 Championship after battling to a goalless draw with Burkina Faso in Yamoussoukro on Saturday, Footynaija.com reports.
The result means both sides finished Group B level on four points, but Nigeria’s superior goal difference ensured they topped the group.
The Eaglets’ opening 4-1 win over Benin Republic ultimately proved decisive, while Burkina Faso’s narrower 1-0 victory against the same opposition left them second.
At the Stade du Lycée Scientifique, Manu Garba’s team looked in control for large parts of the contest, dictating possession and applying constant pressure. Precious chances fell their way, but they could not find the breakthrough against a disciplined Burkinabe backline and an inspired goalkeeper.
Burkina Faso, meanwhile, were content to sit deep and hit on the counter. They managed a few moments of danger, forcing Nigeria’s defenders to stay alert, yet lacked the cutting edge to punish the group leaders.
Despite the stalemate, Nigeria finished the group stage unbeaten and will now face familiar rivals Ghana in the semifinals. Hosts Côte d’Ivoire, who cruised through Group A with three straight wins, take on Burkina Faso in the other fixture.
With only the eventual champions guaranteed a ticket to the 2026 U17 Africa Cup of Nations, the pressure is mounting. Garba will know his side must be more ruthless in front of goal if they are to avoid a repeat of the disappointment of missing the last edition.
