Nigerian international Samuel Kalu has completed a move to Bulgarian top-flight side Botev Plovdiv, marking a new chapter in his career after parting ways with English Championship outfit Watford, Footynaija.com reports.
The 28-year-old winger had his contract with Watford mutually terminated at the end of August 2024, following a difficult spell at Vicarage Road where he struggled for regular playing time.
He managed just a handful of appearances (13) in two seasons with the Hornets, and was shipped out on loan to Swiss Super League side Lausanne-Sport last season.
Kalu, who began his European career with AS Trencin in Slovakia before spells at Gent in Belgium and Bordeaux in France, will now look to revive his career in Bulgaria.
Botev Plovdiv confirmed the signing on their official website, with the Super Eagles star expected to add pace and creativity to their attack.
The Aba-born winger enjoyed his best years at Gent, where he produced 25 goal-contributions in 55 appearances. However, inconsistency and injuries hampered his progress, and his move to England never lived up to expectations.
Despite recent struggles, Kalu remains a talented wide player with experience across Europe’s top leagues. His switch to Bulgaria offers a fresh opportunity to rebuild his form and stake a claim for a recall to the Nigerian national team.
Botev Plovdiv currently compete in the Bulgarian First League and will be counting on Kalu’s experience as they aim for a strong domestic campaign.
