Werder Bremen chief explains club’s immediate plans for Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface

Werder Bremen sporting director Clemens Fritz has opened up on the German club’s plans for Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface, Footynaija.com reports.

Boniface secured a deadline day move to Werder Bremen this summer, joining on a season-long loan from fellow Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen where he had been deemed surplus to squad requirements.

Given Leverkusen’s attempts to offload the Nigeria international since the start of this year, it’s safe to assume that he no longer has a future at the Bay Arena, fueling the possibility of his switch to Bremen becoming permanent next summer.

However, when asked whether Werder Bremen planned to hold on to Boniface beyond this season’s loan spell, Fritz resisted the temptation to look so far ahead into the future, choosing instead to focus the club’s immediate plans for their new striker.

“It’s impossible to say at this point. We’re focusing on the here and now,” he told Transfermarkt.

“The season has just begun. We want to integrate Victor as best we can so that we can get the best performance out of him. To do that, we need to provide him with the best environment – and that’s what we’re working on. Everything else is a matter for the future.

“We had a very good conversation with him (Boniface). It was important to get a feel for each other. It’s no secret that Victor was also in talks with another club, where we might be talking about a different category.

“As Werder Bremen, you naturally want to know from him: Can you imagine playing here with us at the Weserstadion? Can you identify with our club, our path, and our goals? And so a mutual feeling developed. We were on the same page quickly.”

Boniface has already made a good first impression at Werder Bremen, coming off the bench on his debut to provide an assist in a 4-0 routing of Borussia Mochengladbach.

The Super Eagles forward will be eyeing his first start and first goal in Bremen colours this weekend when Freiburg rock up to the Weserstadion on Saturday.
