Nigeria’s World Cup campaign is alive again after a tense 1–0 win over Rwanda at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Saturday evening, Footynaija.com reports.

The Super Eagles, under pressure following the victories of Benin and South Africa the previous day, had to deliver in front of their fans, and they did just enough.

Below are five things we learned from the game.

5. Tolu Arokodare’s Breakthrough Moment

With Victor Osimhen forced off before half-time, questions quickly turned to who would step up. The answer came in the 51st minute when Tolu Arokodare pounced on a scramble inside the Rwandan box to score the decisive goal.

It was his biggest moment yet in the green and white. The striker, who recently signed for English side Wolverhampton Wanderers, showed the instincts of a proper number nine and gave the Super Eagles the relief they desperately needed.

4. Osimhen’s Injury Casts a Shadow

The win may have lifted spirits, but the sight of Victor Osimhen leaving the pitch early raised serious concerns. The Galatasaray striker was substituted in the first half, and the fans in Uyo held their breath.

Nigeria’s qualification hopes arguably rest heavily on Osimhen’s availability, and the injury update in the coming days will be watched closely.

3. Nerves After Benin and South Africa Wins

On Friday, South Africa’s 3–0 thrashing of Lesotho and Benin’s own victory left Nigeria in a tight spot. Fans were already voicing fears of another World Cup absence.

The trepidation before kick-off was real, but the win over Rwanda provided some relief. Still, Nigeria remain third in Group C with 10 points, trailing Benin on 11 and South Africa on 16.

2. Eric Chelle Survives the Pressure for Now

The build-up to the match was filled with questions about Eric Chelle’s future. As revealed in an earlier report, the coach admitted before the game that people had written off his side. His team responded with fight, even if not with fluency.

Chelle’s decision to start Wilfred Ndidi as captain in the absence of William Troost-Ekong and trust young Benjamin Fredrick in defence showed his willingness to back players under the spotlight. The win eases the pressure but only slightly.

1. The South Africa Test Will Define Everything

This win may have kept Nigeria alive, but the next clash against South Africa in Bloemfontein is the ultimate test. A draw or loss will end the Super Eagles’ World Cup dreams, given South Africa’s commanding position at the top.

To complicate matters, FIFA has yet to deliver a ruling on South Africa’s alleged ineligible player case. For Nigeria, the equation is simple: beat South Africa away or wave goodbye to 2026.
