Nigeria’s campaign at the 2024 African Nations Championship ended in frustration, with the Super Eagles B crashing out at the group stage after back-to-back defeats, Footynaija.com reports.
The 4–0 loss to Sudan proved the final blow and has since sparked criticism of the team’s preparation and management. Much of the debate has focused on the decision to bring in Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle to lead the home-based squad.
Many believe it disrupted the rhythm established by Daniel Ogunmodede and Fidelis Ilechukwu, the duo who handled the qualifiers. Ogunmodede, however, has chosen not to distance himself from the disappointment. In an interview with journalist Osasu Obayiuwana as seen on X, the Remo Stars head coach has said that his role as Chelle’s assistant leaves no room for division or blame-shifting.

“Many people are expecting me to say negative things about my head coach (Eric Chelle), because I am no longer in charge of the team and we are not doing well at this #TotalEnergiesCHAN2024. I will never do that. I am his assistant and I accepted to do this job. I stand with him and I sink with him. That is what loyalty and professionalism is about,” Ogunmodede said.
Ogunmodede’s reputation remains strong in Nigerian football. Earlier this year, he led Remo Stars to their first ever Nigeria Premier Football League title, underlining his tactical ability and man-management skills.
The CHAN setback has not altered his outlook, with his message of loyalty standing out in a period when frustration surrounds Nigerian football.
Calls are growing for a review of the structures that support home-based players, as many argue the CHAN failure exposed deeper problems within the NPFL.
