Remo Stars midfielder Tochukwu Michael has opened up about his excitement over a maiden call-up to Nigeria’s Super Eagles B squad, ahead of their highly anticipated 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) opener against defending champions Senegal, Footynaija.com reports.
The Nigeria Premier Football League star is one of nine Remo Stars players selected by head coach Eric Chelle, and he believes team chemistry and a shared sense of purpose will be crucial to Nigeria’s hopes in Group D.
Reflecting on his first national assignment, Michael described it as a proud moment. “For being my first time, it has been a great experience from my coaches down to my teammates,” he said.
While competition within the squad is fierce, Michael embraces the challenge. “It has been a great feeling for me. We have a couple of players good as well. So, it’s a competition — all man for himself,” he stated. “But I have a great feeling that I have so much to offer. I’m looking forward to a lot. But first, I’m looking forward to the team.”
The 24-year-old emphasized the importance of collective belief and strong unity in the squad.
“I really want us to have one mind, one spirit, which is the goal of winning the championship, and we are focused,” he added. “I’m more focused on the team bond. So I can’t play alone. It’s an 11-man’s game. So I believe in everybody, and there’s a positive spirit that will go far.”
He also had high praise for Chelle, lauding the coach’s approach and tactical acumen. “To whom much is given, much is expected. So he’s not a difficult person. He’s a very good coach from my own view because he understands and speaks football,” Michael said. “If you have good understanding, you understand that he’s a quality coach.”
Looking ahead to Tuesday’s clash with Senegal, Michael remains confident. “In as much as we want it, our opponent also wants it. But it’s about who wants it more,” he declared. “So I feel, and I’m positive, that we will not fail the country because it’s a privilege. Amongst many, few were chosen. So we are ready to give our all to have the gold medal at the end.”
Nigeria have never won the CHAN tournament with the Super Eagles B’s best finish being a runners-up spot at the 2018 edition.
