Super Eagles defender Igoh Ogbu has opened up on his reasons for choosing to stay at Slavia Prague despite looking set to take his talents to one of his numerous suitors from Europe’s top leagues, Footynaija.com reports.

Ogbu entered the spotlight last season following some brilliant performances at the heart of defense for Czech Republic giants Slavia Prague, a side he helped to their fourth Czech Liga triumph in six seasons.

His impressive displays even caught the eye of Super Eagles boss Eric Chelle with the center-back receiving his maiden call-up to the Nigeria men’s senior national team and subsequently earning his first three caps for the African nation.

With so much buzz around his name and a number of top clubs reportedly interested in his services, many expected that the 25-year-old would capitalize on the moment to secure a move to one of Europe’s top five leagues.

However, he signed a new contract with Slavia Prague and he has now explained that his familiarity with the Czech team’s setup as well as the allure of Champions League football was enough to make him commit to the Czech champions.

“For me, extending my contract is a good decision and I believe it’s the best one because I understand the system and the philosophy here,” Ogbu said in an exclusive chat with Footy Africa.

“I will also be able to play in the Champions League, which is something I’ve always wanted. That’s why I decided to stay for a while before making the next step. For me, it’s the right choice.”

Ogbu has only four appearances in the Champions League so he’s relatively new to the competition. Next season, he will have the opportunity to add to that number in Slavia Prague colours.

He will also be looking to maintain his solid form and stay in contention for a place in the Super Eagles squad that will take on South Africa and Rwanda in September’s round World Cup qualifying matches.
