Everton and West Ham United are locked in a battle to sign highly-rated Club Brugge midfielder Raphael Onyedika, with both clubs keen to bolster their midfield options ahead of the new season, Footynaija.com reports.

The 24-year-old Nigerian international has emerged as one of Europe’s most promising defensive midfielders after another strong campaign in Belgium.

Onyedika featured in 52 matches across all competitions last season and impressed with his consistency, composure, and energy, especially in the UEFA Champions League.

Originally making his name at Danish side FC Midtjylland, Onyedika joined Club Brugge in 2022 and has since grown into a key player for the Belgian giants. His ability to break up play and drive forward has drawn interest from across Europe, but it is Everton and West Ham who are reportedly leading the race for his signature.

West Ham, under new boss Julen Lopetegui, are in search of reinforcements following the expected departures of Orel Mangala and the expiry of Idrissa Gueye’s contract. Everton, too, are exploring ways to add bite to their midfield after another turbulent campaign.

Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri reports that the Hammers have already opened talks and could move quickly to secure a deal. Club Brugge are believed to be open to selling Onyedika but are holding out for a fee of around €30 million (£25.3m, ₦54.3 billion).

Both Premier League sides have the financial means to match Brugge’s valuation, though negotiations are expected to continue in the coming weeks.
