Super Falcons and Washington Spirit forward Gift Monday has reiterated her commitment to Nigeria’s women’s national team despite her surprise omission from the Super Falcons’ Women’s Africa Cup of Nations squad list, Footynaija.com reports.

Justin Magudu, head coach of the Super Falcons, recently released his final list ahead of the highly anticipated tournament in Morocco later this year and to the surprise of many, Monday failed to make the cut.

The 23-year-old striker is currently in fine form having notched 12 goals and 3 assists in 21 appearances for Spanish side UD Tenerife before transferring to Washington Spirit where she has registered 4 goals and an assist in nine outings so far.

Despite her form, Monday will have to settle for watching her teammates from home. While she expressed disappointment at her omission, the former Rivers Angels striker declared full support for the team and vowed to make a comeback.

What Gift Monday said about her WAFCON omission

“Sometimes the hardest moments reveal the strength of our hearts,” Monday posted on X. “I have seen the official squad list for the upcoming WAFCON tournament and yes, my name isn’t on it.

“While it hurts and is a tough pill to swallow, I want to make it clear that I hold no grudges, no resentment. I am hale and hearty, fully fit, and still deeply in love with the game and the green white green.

“Though I won’t be on the pitch with the team in Morocco, my heart will be there every step of the way… You carry the hopes of millions including mine. I’ll be watching. I’ll be believing. I’ll be back. Come on Super Falcons. Let’s fly high.”

In Monday’s absence, Magudu’s Super Falcons will rely on vastly experienced forward Asisat Oshoala as well as Ifeoma Onumonu. Meanwhile, Malawi-born youngster Chioma Okafor who received her maiden call-up adds a sprinkle of youth to Nigeria’s striking options.
