‘Individual brilliance isn’t enough’ – Wilfred Ndidi issues challenge to Super Eagles
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Leicester City and Nigeria midfielder Wilfred Ndidi has challenged his Super Eagles teammates to stick together as a unit as they look to pull off a miracle in the race for a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Footynaija.com reports.

The Nigeria national team boasts some of the most gifted footballers on the continent, with the likes of Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Alex Iwobi, Ola Aina, Samuel Chukwueze and a host of others all at the disposal of the Super Eagles.

Despite possessing this enviable array of talents, the Super Eagles have not enjoyed much success in recent times. Their last major triumph came in the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations, won by an entirely different squad of players.

Since then, the best Nigeria has managed is an appearance in the final of the most recent edition of the AFCON which they eventually lost to the host nation Côte D’Ivoire.

They failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and are now seriously struggling in their bid to book a ticket ahead of the upcoming 2026 edition.

Speaking during an interview with Proudly Austin, Ndidi, who recently enjoyed the Unity Cup success with Nigeria, acknowledged that despite the array of stars, the Super Eagles need to become a cohesive unit.

“We are going places, we’ve got great talents in the team like two of Africa’s best players,” the ever dependable midfielder said.

“We’ve got a great team and great players. We just need to do more as a team instead of individually, we just need to stick together and do more as a team.”

The Super Eagles currently trail South Africa in their World Cup qualifying group by six points. There’s no room for further lapses if there is to be any hope of successfully turning the tide and achieving their World Cup dream.
