Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi has expressed his desire to remain within the ranks at Nottingham Forest beyond this season despite numerous speculations linking him with a potential move away from The City Ground this summer, Footynaija.com reports.

Awoniyi has endured a rather difficult campaign this season, struggling to get regular playing time after falling behind experienced New Zealand international Chris Wood in the pecking order of attacking options for Nottingham Forest manager Nuno Espirito Santo.

The Nigeria international has a meagre tally of three starts in the Premier League this season for the Tricky Trees with only one goal to his name. A combination of factors including questionable form, fitness issues and managerial preferences have left Awoniyi enduring one of the least productive seasons of his professional career.

Awoniyi’s struggles at The City Ground have sparked speculations about a potential exit from Nottingham Forest in the summer with clubs around Europe said to be interested. However, the 27-year-old recently poured cold water on the rumours, insisting that continuing in the Premier League remains his absolute priority.

“For me, it’s always the Premier League. My family, agent, everyone knows [that] it’s always the Premier League,” he said in a chat with humbleboots.

“I know when I will tell myself, ‘Thank you, Premier League. So, I still have two more years with Nottingham Forest, thank God for that.”

“Everyone knows [It’s the Premier League]. I’ve seen people text me and be like ‘we have this good project in Spain’ — I don’t even reply to them. Sometimes I block them immediately because it’s not my conversation.”

Despite the many rumours, it appears Awoniyi will be staying at Nottingham Forest beyond this summer – unless the club decide otherwise that is.
