AFC Bournemouth have signed highly-rated New Zealand goalkeeper Alex Paulsen from Wellington Phoenix, Soccernet.football reports.

Paulsen, 21, is expected to feature for New Zealand in the upcoming Paris Olympics. He has played for his country at under-17 and under-23 levels.

Paulsen shone in Wellington’s record-breaking 2023/24 season, earning a place in the A-League All-Stars team. He kept 12 clean sheets in 28 games, helping Phoenix reach the playoffs.

On joining Bournemouth, Paulsen said, “I’m humbled to sign with AFC Bournemouth in the Premier League. It’s a dream come true for me, my family, and friends.”

Bournemouth’s chief executive, Neill Blake, said, “We’re pleased to secure Alex’s services. He’s an exciting prospect with clear potential. We look forward to welcoming him in July before he heads to the Olympics.”

Paulsen’s career began with Onehunga Sports in Auckland, leading to his promotion to Wellington’s first team. His standout performances included saving three penalties in a shootout against Melbourne City in 2022 and starring in the 2019 FIFA Under-17 World Cup.

Paulsen was named in the Professional Footballers’ Australia team of the season for 2023/24 and received multiple awards at Wellington Phoenix’s annual ceremony, including players’ player of the year and members’ player of the year.
