London will play host to an exciting men’s football tournament later this year, as Ghana, Nigeria, Jamaica, and Trinidad & Tobago compete in the Unity Cup at the end of May, Footynaija.com reports.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) confirmed the tournament’s return on Wednesday, revealing that the four-nation competition will take place shortly after the conclusion of the European domestic season.

The event will kick off on Tuesday, May 27, with the two Caribbean sides—Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago—facing off in the first semi-final.

The following day, Wednesday, May 28, will see a fierce West African derby between Ghana and Nigeria. The losing teams will battle for bronze on Saturday, May 31, before the winners contest the final later that day.

With significant African and Caribbean diasporas in the UK, the tournament promises to be more than just a footballing spectacle.

According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), the UK is home to 271,000 Nigerians and 113,000 Ghanaians, while an estimated 800,000 people have Jamaican heritage. Around 25,000 Trinidadians also reside in the country.

“The Unity Cup is not just about football—it’s an event that transcends sport,” said Andy Howes, co-director of tournament organisers AfroSport. “Beyond its cultural significance, it highlights the increasing commercial impact of African and Caribbean football, as well as the growing presence of black football fans in English football.”

The competition will take place days after the conclusion of the Premier League, La Liga, Ligue 1, and Serie A campaigns, while the Bundesliga season wraps up a week before the first semi-final.

This marks the Unity Cup’s return after a 20-year hiatus. The last edition, held in 2004, featured Nigeria, Jamaica, and the Republic of Ireland in a round-robin format, with the Super Eagles emerging as champions after winning both matches. All games were played at Charlton Athletic’s The Valley, though this year’s venues in London are yet to be confirmed.

Nigeria enter the tournament as the highest-ranked side at 44th in the FIFA rankings, followed by Jamaica (62nd), Ghana (77th), and Trinidad & Tobago (102nd). The matches will also serve as vital preparation for Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago, who begin their Concacaf World Cup qualifiers in early June.
