Zimbabwe head coach Michael Nees has shared his thoughts ahead of their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Nigeria, Footynaija.com reports.

The Warriors face the Super Eagles in at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Tuesday March 25, 2025, with confidence, hoping to make history by qualifying for their first-ever World Cup.

Speaking at the pre-match press conference in Nigeria, Nees started by thanking the hosts and expressed excitement for the occasion.

“It will be a packed house, I suppose, and an exciting, thrilling game between two good teams. Hopefully, a fair game with no injuries and good officiating. We will definitely give our best and work together as a team.”

When asked about the pressure of facing Nigeria and reports of big financial incentives for victories, Nees remained calm.

“First of all, it’s pleasure and not pressure. Playing in front of a big crowd is exciting for every player. We all remember the COVID times when stadiums were empty. We are here with self-confidence and belief in our performances. Let’s see who will be the better team tomorrow,” he said.

Zimbabwe midfielder Marshall Munetsi also shared his thoughts, stating that making history is the team’s biggest motivation.

“Zimbabwe qualifying for the World Cup would be more historical for us than Nigeria qualifying. That’s what drives us. We didn’t start as we wanted, and we don’t play home matches at home, but we take pleasure in these challenges. We have guys playing internationally, and we’re here to compete and make history.”

Nees also highlighted the importance of performance over results.

“A win gives confidence, but as a coach, you also look at how the team reacts when things don’t go well. Against Benin, it was a very good football match from both sides, and we can take a lot of positives from that”, he added.

He stressed the need to keep fighting for qualification, saying,

“There are still 15 points to play for. Until the games are over, you are obliged to give everything. We believe in our chances, and we are obliged to give our best in every match.”

Zimbabwe will face Nigeria full of belief and determination, knowing that anything is still possible in their World Cup qualifying campaign.
