Olympique de Marseille manager Habib Beye has offered reassurance to Nigerian midfielder Tochukwu Nnadi, insisting the youngster remains part of his plans despite a difficult start to life in France, Footynaija reports.
Nnadi, 22, joined Marseille from Zulte Waregem in January for €6 million but has struggled for minutes, making just three short substitute appearances in Ligue 1, totalling 26 minutes. His limited involvement has raised questions about his role, but Beye has made it clear the situation is largely down to strong competition in midfield.
“No, Nnadi makes a very good impression on me, but it’s in this area where we have the most players, we have seven or eight midfielders. So, in this situation, rotation isn’t necessarily frequent for them,” Beye said as per MaxiFoot.
The Marseille coach praised the Nigerian’s defensive qualities, highlighting his discipline and work rate as key strengths.
“I’m very satisfied with his contribution, especially defensively and his ability to press four or five meters,” he added.
However, Beye also pointed out that improvement is needed if Nnadi is to secure a regular place in the side. He wants the midfielder to offer more going forward, particularly in a system that demands balance in both attack and defence.
“Having spoken with him, I’d also like to see him work on that offensively. He needs to be able to inject some dynamism; in a two-man midfield, you need players who can also contribute in the second line.”
Nnadi’s adaptation has not been straightforward. He arrived under former coach Roberto De Zerbi, who departed soon after, leaving the player to adjust quickly to a new manager and tactical approach. Despite this, Beye remains encouraged by his attitude and progress.
“In his development and adaptation, he needs to work towards that, but we’re very satisfied with his attitude and what he does defensively.”
With Marseille pushing for a place in next season’s UEFA Champions League, competition for places remains intense. Still, Beye has urged patience, backing the Nigerian to make his mark in time.
“We need to continue working with him on his adaptation to gradually integrate him into the team. Like everyone else, he’ll have his chance to play. Sometimes, it takes a little more time.”
Marseille, who sit in fourth place one point behind Lille, next face FC Metz at the Velodrome.
