Nigeria winger Moses Simon has offered a clear insight into the playing style introduced by Eric Chelle, explaining how discipline and intensity have turned the Super Eagles into a difficult side to beat, Footynaija reports.
Speaking after Nigeria’s 2-1 win over Iran in a friendly tournament in Turkey, Simon pointed to a strong collective approach as the foundation of the team’s recent consistency. The forward, who opened the scoring in that match, said the squad’s mindset under Chelle has been key to their unbeaten run in open play since the coach’s appointment in January 2025.
“I think it’s largely down to how we approach games under him,” Simon told OGNigeria.
He added: “The system requires everyone to be involved defensively and when we go on the offensive it’s the same team. His philosophy is if we can’t win it then don’t lose. Almost impossible to play for his team if you are not aggressive and also lack intensity.”
Nigeria’s record under Chelle supports that view. In 19 matches, the team have won 13 and drawn six, showing a balance between attacking threat and defensive control. Simon highlighted the tactical demands placed on players, particularly the need for constant pressing and teamwork across the pitch.
“Regardless of who we play we usually have four forwards on the pitch in his preferred diamond,” he said. “It’s an exclusive edge to press high which he always demand from all of us.”
Chelle’s system, often built around a 4-4-2 diamond, has encouraged Nigeria to stay compact without the ball while remaining sharp and direct in attack. Simon’s role has been central to that plan, with his pace and work rate helping the team stretch opponents and recover possession quickly.
The Super Eagles will look to continue that momentum when they face Jordan in their next match.
