Chibuike Nwaiwu’s journey to his first senior appearance for Nigeria’s Super Eagles almost took an unexpected turn before it even began, with the young defender admitting his excitement nearly caused him to miss his flight, Footynaija reports.
The 22-year-old centre-back was not part of the original squad selected by head coach Eric Chelle for the March international fixtures. However, fate intervened when Calvin Bassey withdrew due to a back injury, paving the way for a late call-up that would change Nwaiwu’s week, and potentially his career.
Drafted into the squad at short notice, the Trabzonspor defender seized his opportunity during Nigeria’s 2-1 friendly victory over Iran. Introduced in the 57th minute in place of Igoh Igbu, Nwaiwu showed composure as the Super Eagles held on for a notable win.

After the match, the defender spoke with pride about reaching a milestone many footballers only dream of.
“It is a privilege for me to represent my country because the dream of all footballers in the world is to represent their country, and I am very happy to make my debut today,” he said.
His path to that moment, however, was nearly derailed by sheer excitement. Nwaiwu revealed that when news of his call-up reached him in Turkey, emotions almost got the better of him.
“When I got the text in my club, I was very happy and excited, and I’m very happy to be here to wear the shirt. I was very excited, and because of the excitement, I nearly missed my flight. When my club posted it, it was a great moment for me.”
Reflecting on the match itself, Nwaiwu was quick to acknowledge the quality of the opposition while also underlining Nigeria’s efficiency.
“They are a very good side; they qualify for World Cups. We took our chances and did a good job. I believe in God, and I believe hard work pays off. Right from my NPFL days, I always said I would wear the national team shirt; I want to represent my country.”
Nwaiwu joined Trabzonspor this January from Austrian side Wolfsberger AC where he won the Austrian Cup last year.
