Iran head coach Amir Ghalenoei has praised the quality and physical strength of Nigeria after his side’s 2-1 defeat to the Super Eagles in a friendly match in Antalya, Turkey, Footynaija reports.
Nigeria made a strong start and quickly took control of the game. Moses Simon opened the scoring in the sixth minute with a calm finish after a fast break. The Super Eagles remained organised and dangerous going forward, and their advantage was extended early in the second half when Akor Adams scored to make it 2-0.
Iran improved as the match went on and reduced the deficit through Mehdi Taremi in the 67th minute, but Nigeria stayed composed in defence to secure the win.
After the match, Ghalenoei focused more on what his team learned and the challenge Nigeria presented. “I think this was a very useful preparation game, especially since we were able to implement Plan B in defense against a strong and physical team like Nigeria,” he said.
He went further in his praise of the Super Eagles, highlighting the level at which their players compete. “Nigeria was a very good team, and all eleven players on this team play in major European leagues such as Spain, Italy, England, France, Greece and Turkey.”
Ghalenoei also explained that the match gave him the chance to assess more of his squad. “The national team needs such games. We also tried to use more players. Fortunately, with the new rules and the possibility of making eight substitutions, we had a good opportunity to evaluate different players.”
Nigeria’s display under Eric Chelle will encourage confidence, with midfield control from Wilfred Ndidi and attacking threat from Ademola Lookman and Samuel Chukwueze proving decisive. The result offers a positive step as the Super Eagles continue their preparations ahead of their next fixture against Jordan.
