David Osagie has set his sights on the Flying Eagles after missing out on Nigeria’s youth set-up at U-17 level, speaking about the setback while continuing his development with Union Woerle Henndorf in Austria, Footynaija.com reports.

The teenage forward plays in the Salzburger Liga, a regional tier in the Austrian football system, where he has been given regular senior football during the 2025–26 season.

Born in 2008, Osagie moved abroad early and grew up away from the pathway of the Nigerian youth team. His progress went untracked during the period when the U-17 side was being put together.

Osagie eyes Flying Eagles call after U-17 miss

“My desire to play for Nigeria dates back to when I was 10,” he said in a report by Blueprint Newspaper. “The stories my parents told me about Nigeria are so fascinating, and I grew up loving the likes of John Obi Mikel and Victor Moses while they were playing in the senior national team.”

That early pull did not bring a call-up. Osagie said he hoped to be part of the U-17 team but heard nothing.

“I desired and hungered to be part of the U-17 team of Nigeria, but the opportunity never came my way,” he said. “No one reported my performance here back in Nigeria. Moreover, the national team coaches didn’t know that I was even existing. It hurt me so much.”

His focus has moved on. Osagie now aims for a place with the Flying Eagles, Nigeria’s U-20 side.

“My focus at the moment is to lead the Flying Eagles attack and to prove a point,” he said, adding that he wants to “contribute my quota to bring glory to Nigeria through the U-20.”

He has also mentioned longer-term ambitions with the Super Eagles, citing Victor Osimhen as a player he admires and hopes one day to partner in attack.

“Goal scoring is my delight and duty,” Osagie said. “That is the reason I love Victor Osimhen, and I keep praying that one day, I will pair him to lead the attack of the Super Eagles.”
