Nigerian midfielder Afeez Aremu has opened up on his decision to join Scottish Premiership side Aberdeen in the January transfer window despite receiving offers from teams in Belgium and Turkey, Footynaija.com reports.
Aremu is looking to revive his European career at Aberdeen after enduring a difficult spell at former employers FC Kaiserslautern where he managed just 11 appearances across the Bundesliga 2 and DFB Pokal in the last six months.
The former Nigeria youth international’s situation in Germany alerted prospective suitors, with teams across Europe wasting no time in registering their interest in acquiring his services.
Aremu eventually joined Aberdeen and has now revealed that his ambitions as well as the comfort of his family were key factors that influenced his decision to ignore other offers in favour of a move to Scotland.

“I had the chance to go to Belgium and Turkey, but I came for the history of the club but also for my family,” he said, per quotes revealed by Press and Journal.
“Playing in an English-speaking country is good for me, good for my wife and kids also. They have been in Germany for a long time, and if they go to Nigeria on vacation, they speak English.
“I didn’t just take this chance for myself, I also wanted to do my best for my family.”
“Honestly, I can’t wait to get started to give everything for the fans. I don’t leave anything behind whatever the situation and I’ll give my all for Aberdeen.”

Aremu will become the fifth Nigerian to play for Aberdeen when he makes his debut for the Dons on Wednesday night, following in the footsteps of Sone Aluko, Chidiebere Nwakali, Peter Ambrose and Danny Uchechi.
