Frank Onyeka says Eric Chelle has delivered a strong personal endorsement of Nigeria’s head coach, praising the Malian for raising the team’s levels, Footynaija.com reports.
The Brentford midfielder praised Chelle’s philosophy, tactical clarity and man-management, insisting the former Mali coach has brought stability after months of uncertainty that saw Nigeria pass through three coaches in nine months before his appointment in January.
Chelle quickly imposed a more aggressive, front-foot style, with Nigeria pressing higher and playing with greater attacking intent. That approach delivered early encouragement, including Unity Cup success in May and an unbeaten run in the final six World Cup qualifiers, even though Nigeria ultimately failed to qualify for the 2026 tournament.
Onyeka, who has played under four coaches for the national team, believes Chelle’s strength lies in how he relates to players.
“I think he came in and changed everything – the way we played, the way we’ve been set up, and his philosophy is just really good,” Onyeka told the BBC.
“He’s a loving coach. The way he speaks to the players, he makes fun of the players. It’s just different compared to what we had before.”
Nigeria suffered a 2-1 defeat to Egypt in Cairo on Tuesday, Chelle’s first loss in regulation time. Chidozie Awaziem scored for Nigeria, but Mahmoud Saber and Mostafa Mohamed secured Egypt’s first win over the Super Eagles in nine years.
Several key players were absent, while Onyeka impressed before being substituted at half-time. Nigeria will now continue preparations for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, opening their campaign against Tanzania on December 23.
