Paul Onuachu has been handed a surprise recall to Nigeria’s provisional squad as head coach Eric Chelle shapes his team for this month’s crucial World Cup playoff against Gabon, Footynaija.com understands.
Reports from Turkey confirm the Trabzonspor striker has been notified of his inclusion in the extended list, marking his first national team involvement since June last year.
The 31-year-old, who last featured in Nigeria’s 2-1 defeat to Benin Republic in 2024, has forced his way back into contention after a blistering start to the Turkish Süper Lig season.
The former Southampton striker has scored seven goals in ten matches and claimed the Goal of the Month awards for August and September.
With several key Nigerian forwards struggling with injuries, Chelle appears to be widening his attacking options.
The Super Eagles boss, who has largely relied on Victor Osimhen, Terem Moffi, and Kelechi Iheanacho, is now said to be impressed by Onuachu’s consistency, aerial strength, and finishing precision.

His recall has also delighted Trabzonspor fans. Vice-president Taner Fikret Saral presented the striker with his Goal of the Month trophy a few days ago, hailing him as “a leader and inspiration.”
While Onuachu’s place in the final squad remains uncertain, his return underlines Chelle’s performance-based selection approach. It’s a timely reminder that Nigeria’s door remains open to anyone performing at the highest level, especially with a World Cup ticket on the line.
