One-time Bundesliga winner Victor Boniface has opened up on his struggles with the Nigeria national team, suggesting that things have just not fallen in his favour when it comes to scoring goals for the Super Eagles, Footynaija.com reports.
Boniface has turned out for the Super Eagles of Nigeria on 13 different occasions since making his debut back in September 2023. He scored his first international goal not long after, finding the back of the net in a friendly game against Saudi Arabia in October 2023.
However, the 24-year-old striker has been unable to register another goal in the Super Eagles’ green and white, with most of his performances for the national team drawing harsh criticism from the passionate fans of the three-time African champions.

Reflecting on his challenges in front of goal for the Super Eagles, Boniface admitted that luck has not been on his side: “I would say I’m just unlucky with the national team in terms of goalscoring,” he explained to assembled journalists in a recent interview.
“I know there are a couple of games where I did good, but scoring goals is the most important thing in football today. People don’t even watch the games, they only go to Livescore. If you score, they think you are Ronaldinho. They do not watch the games and I am sorry for those who think like that.
“My biggest dream as a football player was to represent my country, which I have achieved by pushing myself to that point and I am grateful for it. That it did not go well doesn’t mean I am a bad player. It did not go well with the national team and God knows why. But like I said, I am happy I represented my country.”

Despite his lack of goals, Boniface was a regular member of the Super Eagles squad up until recently. Injuries and poor form have seen him drop out in favour of other striking talents such as Victor Osimhen, Tolu Arokodre, Umar Sadiq and Cyriel Dessers.

Currently on loan at Werder Bremen, Boniface is looking to rediscover the clinical edge that once made him one of the Bundesliga’s most promising striking talents. He is yet to score for Die Grun-Weißen since joining on loan from Bayer Leverkusen, but his focus remains on regaining form and confidence.
A strong run of performances in the German top flight could prove decisive for the Nigerian striker, not just to reassert his value at club level, but also to force his way back into the Super Eagles setup.
