Nigeria international and Udinese goalkeeper, Maduka Okoye, is set to miss the start of the 2025–26 Serie A season after being handed a two-month suspension for involvement in an illegal betting incident, Footynaija.com reports.

The 24-year-old shot-stopper has been sanctioned by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) following a disciplinary review tied to a yellow card he received from Udinese’s 2–1 win over Lazio on 11 March 2024. During the match, Okoye was booked for time-wasting in the 64th minute.

The yellow card, which appeared routine at the time, later triggered suspicion when betting investigators discovered an unusual spike in bets placed specifically on Okoye receiving a booking. The odds were reportedly set at 8/1, and over €120,000 was paid out to punters, with the bulk of the activity traced to the Udine area.

As revealed by OneFootball, Okoye was cleared of match-fixing charges but still found guilty of breaching Article 4, which relates to betting rules in Italian football. While a sporting fraud conviction would have carried a potential four-year ban, the goalkeeper escaped the harshest penalty and was instead hit with a two-month match suspension.

Okoye’s suspension begins on 18 August 2025, ruling him out of Udinese’s Coppa Italia opener and their first six Serie A matches. He will only be eligible to return by mid-October, which puts him out of action for nearly two months at club and international level.

Okoye, who began his career in Germany with Bayer Leverkusen and Fortuna Düsseldorf, enjoyed a breakthrough spell at Sparta Rotterdam before securing a move to Watford. After struggling for game time in England, he joined Udinese in August 2023 and quickly established himself as first choice.
