Super Eagles defender Igoh Ogbu will not be available for Slavia Prague’s upcoming matches after sustaining a muscle injury in the Czech champions’ opening game of 2025/2026 season, Footynaija.com reports.
Top flight football resumed in the Czech Republic on Sunday, 20 July with Ogbu’s Slavia Prague kicking off their 1. Liga title defense against Hradec Kralove at the Fortuna Arena.
Slavia endured a difficult start to the game and found themselves behind late in the first half courtesy of Czech striker Alexandr Sojka’s 40th minute goal. The champions’ woes were further compounded when Ogbu sustained an injury just before the hour mark.

Despite losing the crucial Nigerian defender, Slavia Prague managed to mount a come-back and were in the lead with 10 minutes left to play. However, Ogbu’s calm presence in defense was eventually missed as Hradec Kralove found a late equalizer.
Ogbu’s injury has now been confirmed by the club after an MRI scan revealed that the Super Eagles defender had suffered a muscle injury. This means the 25-year-old will sit out upcoming fixtures, including the highly anticipated derby against Bohemians 1905.
His absence now leaves Slavia vulnerable at a time when they can barely afford any slip-ups. The champions are already under pressure after dropping points in their league opener and head coach Jindrich Trpsovsky must now find away to organise his backline in the absence of his Nigerian lynchpin.

For Ogbu himself, the timing could not be worse. This season was set to be another platform to showcase his talents on both domestic and continental stages to stay on the radar of suitors from Europe’s bigger leagues. Instead, he now faces a race against time to return to fitness and reclaim his place at the heart of Slavia’s defense.
