Eric Chelle’s first two matches as head coach of Nigeria’s Super Eagles have given fans plenty to talk about, Footynaija.com reports.

His tenure began with a solid 2-0 win against Rwanda in Kigali on March 21, thanks to a first-half brace from Victor Osimhen. But just four days later, Nigeria stumbled at home, drawing 1-1 with Zimbabwe in Uyo.

From these two matches, a few key takeaways are starting to show.

1. Victor Osimhen’s return has changed the attack

Nigeria missed Osimhen in their first four World Cup qualifiers. But in Kigali, he showed why he’s one of the world’s top strikers. He scored twice in the first half and was a constant threat.

Against Zimbabwe, he scored again with a diving header in the 74th minute. His presence gives Nigeria real attacking bite. He now has three goals in two matches under Chelle.

2. Defensive lapses remain a problem

In both games, Nigeria’s defence had moments of carelessness. Against Rwanda, the team was lucky not to concede late on. Against Zimbabwe, they paid the price in the 90th minute when Tawanda Chirewa dribbled past tired defenders to equalise. Chelle has work to do in tightening the backline.

3. The midfield balance still needs work

Wilfred Ndidi and Alex Iwobi started both matches, but at times, Nigeria struggled to control the tempo. The Super Eagles looked strong in spells but could not sustain pressure. Chelle may need to consider rotating or tweaking midfield combinations.

4. Chelle’s positive approach is clear

One thing that stands out is Chelle’s attacking intent. Both matches saw Nigeria creating chances, especially down the wings with Moses Simon and Samuel Chukwueze. Chelle wants Nigeria to play on the front foot, but balance will be key in future matches.

5. The group table remains tough

After these two matches, Nigeria sits on seven points from six games, still fourth in Group C. South Africa leads with 13 points, followed by Rwanda and Benin on eight each.

Lesotho has six, and Zimbabwe four. Chelle’s task is clear: win the next matches and climb the table.

Chelle now has a clearer picture of his team’s strengths and weaknesses. If he can fix the defensive lapses and find better midfield balance, Nigeria still has every chance of turning their campaign around.
