Nigeria stumbled at the final hurdle as hosts Ghana lifted the first-ever WAFU-B U17 Girls Cup on Sunday evening, Soccernet.football reports.

Full-time scores stood at 2-2, forcing the game into penalties where Ghana’s Black Maidens triumphed five goals to four.

A lot of credit to Nigeria’s Flamingos, though, as they had to fight back from a two-goal deficit and had a clear goal controversially ruled out for offside.

Nigeria had the first big chance of the encounter but Ghana’s Black Maidens were saved by the post.

The Flamingos would enjoy no such luck as Ghana broke the deadlock through Gertrude Amoafo after the Nigerian girls failed to deal with a corner.

Shortly after, the hosts doubled their advantage with a fierce Priscilla Mensah strike beating goalkeeper Christiana Uzoma.

It was all going great for Ghana until the 34th minute when Nigeria halved the deficit. After Janet Akekoromowei competed for the ball in the danger area, it fell kindly to Precious Oscar, who sent a first-time drive into the roof of the net, leaving goalkeeper Aishetu Fatao without a chance.

Nigeria had the ball in the net just past the hour mark following a clever corner kick, but the referee ruled it out for a non-existent foul after initially awarding Flamingos the goal.

The Nigerian girls were relentless and moments after the post again came to Ghana’s rescue, Harmony Chidi grabbed the equaliser for Flamingos with a looping effort that left the goalkeeper stranded.

Neither team could find a late winner, and the game went straight to penalty, where the Ghanaians were perfect from the spot to clinch the maiden title.
