Bayer Leverkusen slashed Bayern Munich’s lead at the top of the Bundesliga table to five points after Vincent Konpany’s men were stunned by an aggressive Mainz side on Saturday, Soccernet.football reports.

Bayern Munich were a shadow of their classy best as they fell to a disappointing 2-1 defeat against Mainz at the MEWA Arena.

Fresh from crushing Ukrainian giants Shakhtar Donetsk 5-1 in the Champions League in midweek, Bayern could not find their swagger as two goals from South Korean international Lee Jae-sung powered Mainz to a memorable victory.

Leroy Sané reduced the deficit for the Bundesliga leaders in the 87th minute but without the injured Harry Kane, the visitors found no saviour as they fell to their first league defeat of the campaign.

Bayer Leverkusen took advantage of Bayern’s slip as the champions carved out a fine 2-0 win at Augsburg.

Martin Terrier opened the scoring for Xabi Alonso’s men in the 14th minute before Nigerian international Nathan Tella set up Florian Wirtz to double their advantage shortly before halftime.

Bayer Leverkusen, despite the absence of key forwards Patrik Schick and Victor Boniface, climbed to second on the log with 29 points, four fewer than Bayern.

Elsewhere, a brace from Alassane Pléa and further strikes from Tim Kleindienst and Robin Hack powered Borussia M’gladbach to a convincing 4-1 home win against Holstein Kiel.
