Newcastle’s €45 million signing tipped to become ‘one of the world’s best wingers’

Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon is receiving high praise from opponents and football legends alike, with Finnish defender Adam Stahl predicting the winger is on the path to becoming one of the best wingers in the world soon, Soccernet.football reports.

Gordon, who joined Newcastle from Everton in 2023 for €45.60 million, has seen his stock rise considerably over the past year due to his stellar performances.

Last season, the 22-year-old notched an impressive 11 goals and 10 assists in the Premier League, earning a call-up to England’s Euro 2024 squad.

Although he had limited minutes in the tournament, featuring for just 300 seconds as England reached the final, Gordon has continued to make his mark under new manager Lee Carsley.

He recently started in England’s Nations League victories over the Republic of Ireland and Finland.

In the clash against Finland, Adam Stahl, who faced Gordon on the pitch, lauded the Newcastle star.

“The crazy thing is that I have followed Anthony Gordon since he went to Newcastle. He’s a player I think is awesome,” Stahl told Fotbollskanalen.

“I think he will be one of the best wingers in the world soon. It was nice to play against him, it was a good game.” Stahl further revealed that he swapped shirts with Gordon after the match, calling him a “nice and humble guy.”

Stahl’s Djurgardens IF teammate, Miro Tenho, also weighed in, commenting, “Gordon gave him [Stahl] some difficulties. But he did well.”

As Gordon’s reputation continues to grow, Newcastle legend Alan Shearer has suggested a potential positional shift for the winger.

Speaking on The Rest is Football podcast after Newcastle’s 2-1 win over Wolves, Shearer proposed that Gordon could play on the right wing to accommodate other players.

“Barnes and Gordon both want to play on that left-hand side… Gordon went down the middle today because Isak came off at half-time,” Shearer explained.
