Manchester United have appointed Maya Le Tissier as their new captain for the 2024/25 Women’s Super League (WSL) season, following the departure of Katie Zelem.

Le Tissier, who joined United from Brighton & Hove Albion two years ago, has rapidly become a key figure in the team’s defence.

“It’s an honour to be named captain of this great football club and I will wear the armband with real pride, to help drive this team to success on and off the pitch,” Le Tissier expressed, reflecting on her new role.

Zelem, who captained United since 2019 and led the team to an FA Cup triumph in May, left the club at the end of her contract and has since joined Angel City in the NWSL.

Le Tissier’s impact at United has been significant, particularly during the 2022/23 season, where she formed a formidable partnership with Millie Turner, contributing to a record 14 clean sheets and a second-place league finish.

Her performances also earned her a call-up to the England squad, though her international opportunities have been limited by her position preferences under Lionesses coach Sarina Wiegman.

In addition to her new leadership role, Le Tissier was voted United’s joint Players’ Player of the Year for the 2023/24 season, sharing the honour with Ella Toone, who has now been appointed as the team’s vice-captain.

Toone, a long-serving player and United’s all-time top scorer with 53 goals in 164 appearances, will support Le Tissier in guiding the team through the upcoming season.
