James Maddison has been excluded from England’s 26-player squad for Euro 2024 and has left the training camp, Soccernet.football reports.

The Tottenham midfielder came off the bench in England’s 3-0 win over Bosnia on Monday. However, he is the first player from Gareth Southgate’s initial 33-man provisional squad to be dropped for the tournament in Germany, as per Sky Sports.

Southgate must reduce his squad to 26 players by 11 pm on Friday, an hour after England’s final Euro 2024 warm-up match against Iceland at Wembley.

England’s Euro 2024 campaign begins on June 16 against Serbia.

Maddison, who was part of the 26-man squad for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar but did not play, will miss another major tournament.

Despite an impressive start to the season with Tottenham, scoring three goals and providing five assists in his first nine Premier League games, Maddison’s form has declined. His only league goal contributions since March 10 were against Burnley and Sheffield United.

A three-month injury further impacted his season, and his form has not recovered. This has been a recurring issue for Maddison, who tends to start seasons strongly but fade as they progress, which is not ideal for international selection.

The performances of Eberechi Eze and Cole Palmer against Bosnia may have influenced Southgate’s decision. Both players impressed and might have moved ahead of Maddison in the selection order.

With Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden also in the squad, Maddison, who was a last-minute inclusion for the 2022 World Cup, is the first to be cut from the Euros squad.
