The UEFA Champions League is undergoing a massive overhaul for the 2024/25 season, shaking up the landscape of European football as we know it.

Here’s the lowdown on the seismic changes set to hit the competition, and how it’ll affect fans and other UEFA club tournaments.

Champions League Format Shake-Up: What’s Changing?

The big shake-up in the pipeline? Say goodbye to the traditional group stage setup. Currently, the group stage hosts 32 teams divided into eight groups.

But come 2024/25, brace yourselves for 36 elite clubs battling it out in a single league phase, ranking them all on one big leaderboard.

Man City, Arsenal, Real Madrid, Bayer Leverkusen, Inter Milan, and Bayern Munich have all qualified for the Champions League next season.

And all of them will be placed in the same group setting the stage for some of the most exciting group matches to have ever been witnessed in the competition.

Under this fresh format, each team will lock horns with eight different opponents instead of the usual three home and away clashes. A draw will determine the matchups, ensuring a diverse mix of rivals for every club.

This means more nail-biting clashes and a chance for fans to witness top-tier showdowns earlier in the competition.

Extra Group Stage Spots: Who Gets In?

Qualifying for the Champions League remains a hotly contested affair, hinging on a club’s domestic league finish and their association’s UEFA ranking. The four additional spots up for grabs for the 2024/25 season will be allocated as follows:

Slot One: Snagged by the third-ranked club in the fifth-positioned association, based on the UEFA club coefficient ranking.

Slot Two: Reserved for a domestic champion, upping the total clubs from four to five in the Champions path.

Slots Three and Four: Rewarded to associations with stellar previous season performances, earning an automatic league phase spot for their next-best ranked domestic club.

Road to Knockout Phase: How to Qualify?

Every match counts in the league phase, with wins bagging three points and draws securing one. The top eight teams in the league standings punch their tickets straight to the round of 16, while the 9th to 24th-placed teams duke it out in knockout phase playoffs.

It’s do or die for those ranking 25th or lower, with no lifeline to the UEFA Europa League.

In the knockout phase, teams ranked 9th to 16th face off against 17th to 24th, setting the stage for an electrifying battle towards the round of 16.

rawing inspiration from the league phase, matchups are partly determined by rankings, adding an extra layer of intrigue to the knockout rounds.

Europa League and Conference League: A Format Facelift

The winds of change aren’t limited to the Champions League alone. Brace yourselves for revamped formats in the UEFA Europa League and the UEFA Conference League, featuring 36 teams each in the league phase.

More matches, more opponents, and more drama await football fans across Europe come 2024/25.
