Arsenal have announced that Jorginho has penned down a short-term extension, firmly shutting the door on a potential Serie A homecoming, Soccernet.football reports.

At 32, Jorginho has been a key player this season in Arsenal’s quest for a title league title in two decades.

The former Chelsea midfielder has made ten Premier League starts since the turn of the year, helping Mikel Arteta’s men in their neck-and-neck race with Manchester City for the title.

Hints were dropped by Jorginho’s agent back in March about a possible return to the Italian Serie A, where he made his name playing for Verona and Napoli before his Chelsea venture commenced in July 2018 for a jaw-dropping £50m.

Nevertheless, Arsenal, mindful of the invaluable experience Jorginho brings, were eager to keep him amidst the youthful vigour of Arteta’s squad.

Consequently, terms were swiftly agreed upon at the month’s end, sealing the deal for what’s rumoured to be another season. Jorginho had initially inked an 18-month contract upon his arrival from Chelsea in January 2023.

Arteta, brimming with delight, expressed, “We’re delighted that Jorgi has signed a new contract with us.

“Jorgi is such an important part of our team, a role model with great leadership skills and a unique playing style ability which makes everybody better around him on the pitch. We’re very pleased that Jorgi and his family have committed with us and we’re all excited to continue this journey together.”

The sporting director, Edu, said: “He represents what we stand for here at Arsenal with his professionalism and success. I know everyone at the club will be very excited that Jorgi will continue to be with us, not only the players and coaches but all the staff behind the scenes as well. It’s great that Jorginho remains with us, as we continue building to be better and stronger.”
